Shopping Center: First Korean Market
While I was in San Diego, CA for AfroCon, my friend Monique came to partake in the festivities and show support. - Words cannot express the "thank you" and gratitude I feel towards her venturing down to see us! - At one point, Monique became hungry and we ventured off grounds of the convention to find food. She settled on McDonalds and I wasn't hungry, but nearby was a Korean based shopping center called the "First Korean Market" and in there was a boba/desserts eatery that we just had to try!
I've become a fan of boba since moving to California. Before living on the West Coast, boba spots were few and far between and not very tasty either. California opened my eyes to what boba can really be and it can be amazing! I've since had boba in other countries - Switzerland & Finland - and I still have not found anything close to what you can purchase in California. I'm sure the origin countries in Asia have the best, but I've not ventured back to that continent yet.
The shopping center itself was small. It was comprised of a u-shaped block of businesses that seemed to consist mostly of restaurants or places to grab a treat to eat.
Monique and I have a history of grabbing boba (and sushi) together, so we were excited to see there was a highly rated spot across the street from McDonalds. I'm not gonna front, the little penguin mascot really drew me in! It's so cute and penguins are my favorite animal!
The inside is small and due to COVID, all of the chairs and tables were put up and there is a sign that it is "takeout only". You order at a makeshift stand that is very distanced from the actual register and also where they prepare the drinks and desserts. They also have a policy for customers to wait outside for their order and wear masks while inside. I was very pleased to see their safe and cautious approach to the COVID pandemic.
My apologies for the poor quality photos of the menu. The lighting was low due to the sun roof and I'm not the best with taking photos with high reflection. In my defense, I have never claimed to be an actual photographer. I'm just a girl who enjoys exploring and seeing the world and sharing what I find.
The menu looked delicious. There were so many options I wanted to try and I wish there was a (penguin) Boba Bar up here in the Bay Area for us to able to explore all these options with our taste buds! It took me a moment to choose, but I ended up with the Mango Lava and it was delicious.
Their desserts looked delicious and if I had been hungry I would have tried one, but I just couldn't stomach eating anything at that time. When I go back to San Diego, I will definitely do everything I can to make sure I stop here again to be able to try one of these!
Unfortunately, I did not get a snapshot of our drinks, but as I said: mine was delicious! We were in a bit of a hurry to get back to the convention, since I was technically on-hand as a staff member.
Overall, I would rate this place a 5 out 5! The staff was friendly and patient with us, and they were smart and safe about the pandemic. Their drinks were tasty and the prices were in line with most major cities here in California.
Upon doing some research, I found that this company has another location in National City, California.
